R&D
When Hema West Black Sea Energy Projects came up, first a R&D department was established in June 2005.
Young engineers who knew English and could use computers programs efficiently were fired for the R&D department.
Initially a library was founded by gathering all the studies (maps, graphs, reports, drilling information etc.) that has been done on our license areas concerning “Coal and Coal Based Gas issues”.

Those previous studies have been computerized and a database of our operation area was created. Geological model studies of the basin started through this database. The total reserves of Amasra Hardcoal Field were computed using the database.
In addition to this information, a need for further information was noticed and a Drilling Group was formed within HEMA.
wherever there was a lack of information in the operation field, drilling location suggestions were made for lightening of the geology of the field by R&D.
The database was constantly updated with the new data gained in drillings. Determining the age of the coals that was cut in the drillings was necessary in order to form the geological model and the first “Palinology Lab” in the private sector with its technical office hardware and software was established and started to operate with its predominantly geological personnel in December 2006.
A “Drilling Core Storehouse” was founded for storing the drillings cores that was gained in the drillings. (Image 3) All the units that are gained in the drillings done by HEMA are stored here. Also all the pictures of the drillings cores were taken and “Drilling Core Photo Albums” were made. (Image 4)
These seams cut in the drillings are being sent to various labs for analysis in order to designate their quality and usage areas. Coking coal seams are identified by this way. With the help of analysis results, coal seams can be classified according to their character.
Logs and reports of the drillings performed are prepared by the Drilling Group. “Coal Thickness Maps” are being prepared in order to enlighten the Amasra Hardcoal Field with the help of new and old information.
Correlations of three coal seams (Ceiling, Thick, and Stony Seams) have been done by previous and new information.
The following computer programs have been used in the process of the mentioned studies:
· Rockworks
· Mapinfo
· Surfer
· LogPlot
· CorelDraw
